Pinky and Illich

I read Ivan Illich's Deschooling Society for the first time about a year ago. It has had a pretty big impact on my view of what education is, and how I want to do it. It is free online here if anyone would like to read it. I did a presentation on Illich in one of my M. Ed. courses last fall. After doing some online research about Illich the man I came across this clip on youtube which is a great video even if you haven't read the book. I showed the video at the end of my presentation. It is pretty powerful. I see the Open Education movement as the possible beginnings of a realization of what Illich was talking about. Anyway enjoy the clip.

  1. You radical hippie you--you're time warping. The truth is always there. The challenge is formidable because sometimes it's the students who are the most comfortable in the system. A quote I use every year with my students is "Education is either to calm the disturbed or distrub the calm." That's where you start building a curriculum. I loved this.

  2. Thank you for your comments. I have been away from the blog for too long. Life is crazy right now. Leia and I are both teaching - my daily situation is tough. I am constantly worried about my own kids, "are they getting what they need from us right now, etc. The planning, beaurocracy, and required maintenance of the status quo is not allowing me to develop the things I need to do this the way I want to. Your feedback is welcomed. I really appreciate it. I need it.
